Welcome to PACDIL

By simply clicking "Search" on the bar above, the entries in this website can be viewed immediately, without any further formalities (such as a password).  But note that they have not been checked or edited by the Site Coordinators -- that is not their function in a project that, by design, at all times represents work in progress.

Indeed, users should consider all the entries here to have been made, as it were, in pencil.

For decades scholars from around the world have been making pencilled annotations in their own copies of the Royal Irish Academy's Dictionary of the Irish Language. Many of these consist of references to additions and corrections published in books and journals.

This website should be viewed as a joint repository for such "pencilled" references to published additions and corrections. It is as if all the contributing scholars were working in the same library, with access only to one great dictionary into which to make their annotations. Readers should not expect such annotations to be definitive or authoritative or mutually consistent in approach or outlook. Instead, the purpose of these pencilled notes is to alert readers to the existence and location of relevant published material. The idea is to enable readers to check the source for themselves, and see if they agree with the summary "pencilled" here.
